Benahavís: The Gastronomic Village That Also Happens to Be One of Spain’s Wealthiest Municipalities

Turn off the coast road somewhere between San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona, and within a couple of minutes the noise of the strip falls away entirely. The road narrows and begins to climb, following a river valley up into the foothills, past oak and pine, until a cluster of white houses appears on the hillside ahead. This is Benahavís — and despite sitting just minutes from Marbella and Puerto Banús, it operates on an entirely different register.

Benahavís is, by most measures, the highest-income municipality in Spain. It is also, somewhat improbably, one of the least understood.

While Marbella and Puerto Banús draw the crowds along the coast, Benahavís sits quietly in the hills just behind them — a 145 square kilometre municipality where roughly 70–90% of the land remains protected for its environmental significance, and where net household income averages around €33,868, among the highest anywhere on the Costa del Sol. Founded in the late 11th century by the Moors, the village takes its name from ‘Ben al Havis’ — ‘son of Havis’ — and its elevated, strategically defensive position still defines the views today.

Benahavís has earned its local nickname, ‘Rincón de la Gastronomía’ — the gastronomic corner of the Costa del Sol — through a genuinely exceptional concentration of restaurants for a village of its size, ranging from traditional mountain tapas bars to internationally recognised fine dining, all set within an authentic, whitewashed Andalusian pueblo that has kept its soul even as the wealth around it has grown.
